Unbeatable safety
TRW has launched a dynamic 12 month, pan-European campaign for drum brakes and actuation programmes. TRW is using the campaign to highlight the importance of drum brake and actuation products.
- Drum brakes are fitted to 45% of new cars globally and this figure is predicted to remain above 40% for the next five years.
- Hidden under a drum or inside the car, actuation parts are often not given due consideration as ‘safety critical’ parts. Regardless of the calibre or type of braking system fitted to the vehicle, if actuation parts such as: brake hoses; master cylinder or brake fluid are not working properly you will experience reduced braking performance.
The importance of rear brakes
There is also a dangerous misconception that the rear brakes are not as important as the front brakes, as the front brakes provide up to 80% of the braking force. Even though the rear brakes contribute less braking force, they still have the biggest impact on the stability of a car. Lack of maintenance or fitting lesser quality parts to the rear brakes can have a serious effect both in emergency braking situations.
TRW’s Product Manager for Drum Brake and Actuation Systems, Barbara Koerfer, explained: “Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) have evolved considerably in recent years; the latest versions not only prevent wheel lock during braking, but also electronically control the dynamic behaviour of the car under serious braking and driving conditions. This function, known as the vehicle stability control system (VSC) can incorporate: electronic brake force distribution (EBD); traction control system (TC), hydraulic brake assist (HBA) or cornering brake control (CBC) all of which regulate the braking force on either the front or rear axle under different circumstances. This means that in certain circumstances, for example, when there is ice on the road, the rear axle provides a greater level of braking.”
Supporting Material
Supported with repair and replace advice, promotional material and monthly product offers, TRW will communicate the messages of safety and the importance of regular checks and the dangers of defective parts to garages and drivers. The campaign will also be supported through TRW-Diamonds, TRW’s garage loyalty scheme, which will offer at least double diamonds on all drum brake and actuation purchases by garages in 2012.
