Tech Talk

Although up to 90 per cent of a car’s total brake force is transmitted to the road by the front axle, in critical brake situations the rear axle contributes significantly to ensuring the optimum brake performance and driving stability.

Within three years, spring tension can decrease by 50 per cent. As safety critical components, any faulty brake parts should be immediately replaced. Research also shows that for safety reasons, the combined group of components should be replaced and not just the faulty individual part – for example changing the brakes on the complete axle would help to avoid uneven braking.

The advantages of using a TRW Superkit

  • One order: All components including the complete, tested adjuster unit are available in one box, with no need to re-use worn or rusty parts.
  • Time Saving: The kit saves the garage up to 50 per cent repair time as the pre-assembled unit can be mounted straight to the axle. That equates to up to 30 minutes!
  • Safe: Pre-assembled kits allow the garage to safely repair drum brakes and help to prevent mistakes

Increased safety

TRW has engineered and developed the ‘TRW Super Incremental Adjuster’, which automatically maintains the clearance between brake shoes and brake drums.
All Super Incremental Adjusters are proofed and homologated by the Federal Motor Transport Authority of Germany (KBA).

TRW’s Super Incremental Adjusters include a thermo clip, assembled between the push rod and the adjuster nut. This bi-metallic thermo clip regulates the distance between the brake shoe and the brake drum when the drum diameter expands due to increased temperature conditions (caused by permanent use of the brakes). To prevent adjustment under these conditions, which would lead to a seized brake when the drum cools and its diameter shrinks, the Thermoclip increases the overall length of the adjuster unit, and the adjuster is in this way prevented from operating until both the drum and the Thermoclip have cooled down.

As standard in many OE braking systems, adjusters ensure that the drive always has the optimum brake pedal feeling.

Seal of approval

TRW Superkits guarantee the finest quality because they are manufactured in-house and are 100% end-of-line tested. This comprehensive testing programme is documented, approved and guaranteed by the TRW hologram on every Superkit box.
