Influential members of the European aftermarket press were this month transported to TRW’s 12-year-old centre of excellence in Frydlant, Czech Republic, to learn more about remanufacturing. The press heard about TRW’s focus on safety and the processes and technologies employed in the remanufacture of its Original Equipment (OE) quality products.
Impressive growth
With an impressive growth strategy of thirty per cent year on year, TRW remanufactured more than half a million traditional and mechatronic (hybrid of mechanical, electrical and electronic) components in 2010.
With 15 journalists, from five countries in attendance, the translators were kept busy. But the one message that they all received loud and clear, is that TRW is serious – very serious - about remanufacturing – and that the business may even have a few surprises in store for us in the months ahead.
In his presentation, Remanufacturing Group (RMG) head, Michael Von Linden, talked not only of the environmental and financial benefits of remanufacturing, but that with an aging car parc it may be the only way to keep some vehicles on the road – an issue that is high on the agenda given the current economic climate.
Products that don't cost the earth
Michael explained how TRW’s philosophy provides parts that are tested to the same level as new, awarded the same warranties as new and perform to the same standard as new, is based on the three pillars of: Quality, Range and Core. Highlighting the huge focus the business places on safety, Michael outlined the work being done with others in the industry and key Bodies such as CLEPA, to improve legislation in the field.
Richard Bowler, Editor of Professional Motor Mechanic magazine said: “The trip really opened my eyes to everything that TRW is doing in the field. The facility is truly state of the art and the product and technology development impressive.”
