Chevrolet wins again before Hungarian crowd

WTCC fast facts

  • Championship is in its seventh year
  • 2011 landmark year with adoption of new 1.6l turbo engine
  • First motor sports event produced and broadcast in HD in 160 countries, across 70 channels  to more than 430 million viewers

Chevrolet collected two more victories in Budapest. This means the team has won an impressive seven out of the eight races held so far.

Alain Menu and Yvan Muller took first places in the races – the first of the season for Menu, the 2010 champion.

But Rob Huff was probably the happiest of the Chevrolet team as he took fourth and second place respectively – allowing him to salvage his place on the leadership scoreboard, shaken by a disappointing qualifier.

A massive crowd gathered at the first ever Hungarian WTCC race, with the majority cheering enthusiastically for national, Norbert Michelisz, who finished the race in a respectable seventh place. Official figures put the crowd at 75,000 over the weekend.

More than 60,000 spectators held their breath on the Sunday as the heavy rain resulted in the second race being red flagged. After the engineers changed to rain tyres - to cope with the deluge and changes to the surface of the racetrack - the cars restarted the race behind TRW’s Safety Car.

So, with Huff leading the championship with 150 points and a clear 31 points ahead of Yvan Muller and 46 points ahead of Alain Menu – with eight races still remaining of the 2011 WTTC, the victors name is still in the lap of the Gods, but it’s certainly looking promising for TRW’s favourite team – Chevrolet.
